THE MATRIARCH

NEFERTITI
(Count Manilla* ex Tou Fail - by Ibn Fayrial)
DAHMIEH OM AAMR

The Bostocks matriarch, Nefertiti, foaled in 1959, is directly responsible for the majority of our mareline. An outstanding producer - her stock over the years formed the basis of the Bostocks stud. A strong and correct mare, she was a winner at halter and a successful performer under saddle as well. But her real strength was in producing outstanding saddle Arabians under the BOSTOCKS label. A number of Australian National Champions stem directly from her. Our most successful broodmares have multiple crosses to this great mare.

The dam line of Nefertiti is of the imported Crabbet mare DAHNA. Bred at Crabbet Park by the esteemed desert bred sire KARS and out of the desert bred mare DAHMA. Foaled in 1883 DAHNA was imported to Australia in 1891 and her line remains extremely strong in Australian breeding today.

Nefertiti's breeding record reads like a 'who's who' in successful Australian bloodlines today she produced 16 foals in her lifetime - 8 sons - two of which have bred on significantly and her first five daughters have all produced outstandingly for her owners and the breed in general:

KASTANA     by     CRYSTAL FIRE*     Outstanding broodmare DAM/G'DAM/GREAT G'DAM of Australian Champions.
LAODECIA    by     CRYSTAL FIRE*     Excellent broodmare for the EL SHALAO stud QLD.
FAYDA          by     SIROCCO               The BEAUTIFUL - and dam of the Abiram mare SADAF.
NOFRET        by     ABIRAM*               A beautiful broodmare of the Abriam line for BOSTOCKS
MISIK           by     ABIRAM*               A great breeding mare dam of ROYAL GINDI / DOMIGNON.

Her two most significant sons were the stallions and prominent sires:

ABYAD          by     ABUKATU (CRYSTAL FIRE* ex DOMINITA*) an excellent sire of stock.
BALLORA       by     CRYSTAL FIRE*      A excellent and prolific sire in Western Australia.

At SGA we did not set out to establish a herd of many and varied mare lines. Instead we choose to base our stud on one exemplary mare and breed along these lines outcrossing as required. In the NEFERTITI granddaughter Torryburn Handama we acquired both an exceptional example of the breed AND of this great mare's bloodline. Additionally Handama provided an exceptional beginning for a continuing breeding line. We have however also added a couple of other mares to our herd who stem directly from NEFERTITI and ensure that HER successful line is the basis of all our success. As a result 90% of our current females are from Neferititi's line resulting in an ongoing strength and consistency of quality and type. While some of our younger stock may show a little more breed type and refinement - as a group the strong bodies, excellent movement, great style and outstanding saddle horse ability and temperament of the line continues unchanged.

TORRYBURN HANDAMA
(Ibn Antar* ex Nofret - by Abiram*)
DAHMIEH OM AAMR

This was the mare that really started us on track. A classically beautiful daughter of the beautiful EAO bred straight Egyptian stallion IBN ANTAR who was imported from GLEANNLOCH stud in the USA. He was a classic style horse with lovely conformation - great style and good movement. He was sired by an outstanding breeding horse in ANTAR and out of a gem of a producer in BINT MONA who was also the dam of such noteable individuals as The Egyptian Prince / Mohossen and Il Muna. Handama was very like her sire in appearance - she was his mirror in looks and traits.

When Ibn Antar was bred to the lovely mare NOFRET -  herself a beautiful and noted producing daughter of ABIRAM and NEFERTITI their daughter was not only a classic style mare of great quality - but both her parents also contributed excellent movement to their daughter.

While she was rarely shown -in 1991 Handama placed First in her class at the National Stud Show, under Mr Gordon Walter from the USA - and a  week later she was Champion Mare at the New England Showcase A Class Show.

Handama was always been used as a saddle horse, and aside from being used for pleasure and trail riding and stockwork - she was also raced when we tried to initiate a NSW based racing fraternity back in the 1980's. She was a beautiful mare and a beautiful saddle mare as well.

As a broodmare Handama was not been bred as often as perhaps we should have. But if she had only ever produced us the mare SG BINT JASEEM, we would be happy. She did produce sons to such stallions as Torryburn Jaseem (TORRYBURN HANZEER), Baskeer (ANTARUS), Warranty* (WISJTAR) and also Crystal Count. Of these four - three have been utilized in purebred breeding programs. We retained her Warranty son WISJTAR until his untimely death.

Handama was selected for the first breeding of her then young grandson ABU JAASK. Her patience, and his enthusiasm resulted in the lovely grey filly HAJAALA. Selected as a yearling by Judy Burton for an endurance career where she has excelled with many wins to her credit here in Australia - and from where she has since been exported to the Middle East.

TORRYBURN HANDAMA with filly foal HADESSA

As an older mare, Handama did produce for us one of the small number of fillies produced here in Australia by the exported World Reserve Champion Stallion, DASSEFA. Named HADESSA (pictured above) - we retained this young mare in the stud where her classic type and great strength of body to breed to our own sire ABU JAASK - the resulting filly from this mating HAZAALAH has been retained to continue this line in our breeding program.

March 22, 2005 marked the end of an era here with Handama being quietly laid to rest. Her foundered feet of several years finally becoming too much of a liability for her comfort. To the end she was the very essence of the true Arabian mare and she is sorely missed. Her daughters, grand daughhters and great grand daughters bless our pastures and our future.
